Pre Sear Black Bear Charming!!!
The following guide is to show you how to charm you're own bear in pre-searing.
First you need foibles fair, and you need a partner. Now you're partner doesn't need any knockdown skills at all.
Person1 ((p1)You) stands back and lets p2 aggro the bear and let the bear attack him. P2 should be standing on the edge of P1s aggro circle. When the bear casts brutal mual P2 starts running away and P1 starts to cast charm animal.
If you do this right the bear will chase P2 and he will not be able to use break charm.

Wrong. You can charm the wolf easily in pre-sear, it's red, and the bear with difficulty.

I tried that in pre...then got frustrated so I picked up a bear outside droks (had a wolf until then). I didn't bring henches; they'd kill the bear, so with a little bit of fancy footwork I was able to get a bear just a little northeast of droks without fighting any groups.

Most of the time in Factions, the red pets are charmed already by the AI, like Yetis in Pongmei Valley with Cranes and Tigers.

OK, i have bears on two char's from months ago. However, this has now been nerfed. A guy offered me 1k to tame a bear for him, so i did the trick (which i have done many times before for guildies etc)
The bear now runs back to the person casting charm, hence the trick does not work anymore.
Nerfed

Just take the quest of the ranger where getting "charm animal", you wont have to choose ranger as second class for this. I have a Mo6 with a strider beside her in pre searing Ascalon.

- Taming a Black Bear in Pre-Searing is very difficult but not impossible. It takes two people working together to do this. Have the bear engage the other player, and have the one trying to charm the bear, stand so that the bear will be on the edge of his aggro bubble. Both players should wait until the bear uses its Brutal Mauling skill. You can figure out when by counting the bear's attacks - it will use it every fourth attack. As soon as it does, the charmer must use Charm Animal, and the other player must run in the other direction. The bear must be made to chase the retreating player to get it far from the one using the skill. If done correctly, the bear will have moved too far away for it to use Breaking Charm in time. It will definitely require several tries to get it right.
- Another also rather difficult way of taming the bear is to be either a Ranger/Necromancer or a Necromancer/Ranger with Faintheartedness and teamed up with a Warrior/Monk or a Monk/Warrior and have them use a hammer. Start off with Faintheartedness to slow the attack speed of Brutal Mauling. Just before the bear finishes, have your teammate use Hammer Bash to knock the bear down, followed immediately by Bane Signet to knock the bear down again. Before the bear gets up, you will have reached the 10 seconds needed for the charm to work, and the bear is yours.

It's sort of been there for a long time...

Yes they can.
Simply take the Ranger secondary quest, learn the skills and cap the bear. Tada!
You can use the skills all you want before taking a permanent secondary, or change your "temp" secondary by taking skills for another. If you do take skills for another "temp" secondary you can always go back, get the skills for the ranger again, zone into explorable area and there's your pet again.
Have you had any major head injuries lately?
